Okay Greece, Get Ready For The Maus!!!!!!
Do I look like the kind of person that would pass up a chance to have ringside seats for the collapse of the Euro? Hell no say I! In fact, I expect to get spattered with blood (cocktail in hand) when Germany lands that knockout blow! Keeping that in mind wifey and I have decided to spend a bit of our time later on this summer in the Greek Isles, relaxing on the sand, drinking Retsina (I’m addicted!) and perhaps bearing witness to some Trotskyist protestors. Ah, sweet, sweet summer of 2012…….
We went for our honeymoon five years ago, spending a quiet week on Corfu while wifey attended a workshop and I…well…..relaxed! It was magical. I adore the earthy approach to food the Greeks possess and have tried to live their adage “Cooking is neither a masculine or feminine activity but an act of affection”. For the most part we ditched the douchebag tourist spots and tried to eat where the locals did. I loved fried sardines with a cold Mythos sitting in a beach side taverna and dining both on and off The Plaka in Athens was wonderful. The food was generally really great except for a pizza we had that was so horrific whomever made it should have been arrested, flown to The Hague and brought up on charges of crimes against humanity in an international court of law.
Note: do not order pizza in Greece.
On Corfu our accommodations had a decent sized kitchen so I was even able to mess around with some of the local ingredients. I made lamb stew for the matriarch of the family who owned our rental, and in my broken Greek I tried to explain what it was but I think she got the point. I’m always trying to convince foreigners that not all Americans are jerks.
This trip we’ll be using both Santorini and Corfu as our home bases while we explore the islands and take in the local sights, sounds and food. I’ll be taking notes all the way and be giving ya’ll some insights into my culinary experience there. Hey! Maybe I’ll even get caught in the middle of a riot and get shot at with a water cannon! That’d be rad………
